Main Take-Aways from the Orientation Session
(Knowing that a summary is difficult without the context of the orientation presentation.)

In an IMMERSION environment, your child's brain automatically learns French: the perceived effort goes down while the learning impact goes up. The good news is that you can simulate such an environment easily at home to support progress at the Saturday School at little cost by integrating French into your daily and weekly routines.

  1. Weekly structured environment with peers = school, e.g. the French Saturday School
    1. develop literacy, identity, and relationships with children of the same age.
    2. Saturday School Tip 1: read the weekly teacher message and start a conversation with your child about something specific that was discussed in class (instead of asking a general question).
    3. Saturday School Tip 2: spend 10-15 minutes on homework on several evening during the week (instead of 1 hour on Friday evening).
    4. Saturday School Tip 3: impact and importance of the midweek session.
  2. Have the opportunity to do things that are important and relevant for the student in French
    1. follow an activity that the child is passionate about (e.g. Soccer, Dance, etc.)
    2. develop and maintain fluency, motivation, and relationships.
  3. Recognize that English is the language dominating the environment and is fully acquired automatically
    1. therefore, the local language does not need additional opportunities for practice
    2. therefore, everything that can be in French in the daily and weekly routine should be offered in French.
  4. Media in French: the low cost and fun support with a high impact
    1. develop fluency, cultural references, literacy while absorbing interesting and relevant (for the child) information
    2. benefit from the age-appropriate (by age group) and high-quality magazine from Editions Bayard (delivered to your mail box at a preferential price - see below)
    3. TV (e.g. Netflix) and YouTube only in French if possible
    4. buy French DVDs for children (see the player and links above ) (Also ensuring that there are no commercials in English interrupting the French immersion time.)
    5. see more resources below.
  5. Build and Maintain Relevant Relationships
    1. if possible, summer trip to be with the francophone grandparents and cousins
    2. if possible, attend a local summer camp in a French speaking country (outside the cities is easier and fewer to no children will speak English there)
    3. use French naturally and develop fluency, cultural references, childhood memories, relationships, and emotional attachment.
